Description

This catalog indexes Earth models contributed to the EarthScope Earth Model Collaboration (EMC) by the geoscience community, all standardized to the NetCDF-4 Classic format with compression enabled.

Models are grouped by inferred geographic coverage — Global, Continental, Regional, Local, or Projected (models defined on a projected, non-lat/lon grid). Within the Continental, Regional, Local, and Projected tabs, models are further broken into approximate continent subgroups (e.g. Africa, Asia, North America) based on each model's geographic center, with an "Other / Ocean" bucket for models centered over open ocean. Global models aren't subgrouped since they cover the whole planet.

Using the filters:

  • Search matches against model name, title, summary, type/subtype, coverage area, and file names.
  • Grid narrows results to models with a 2D or 3D grid.
  • Variable narrows results to models that include one or more selected physical variables (Ctrl/Cmd-click, or Shift-click, to select multiple); leave on "Any" to include every variable.
  • The counts at the top of the Models section (e.g. "38 Global, 32 Continental…") link directly to each coverage-area tab.
  • Each tab's collapsed header lists every matching model name for quick scanning, or its continent subgroups if it has them; expand a card grid to see full metadata, variables, and files for each model.

Using the globe view:

Model cards with a known geographic extent show a 🌐 View on Globe button. Click it to open a 3D globe showing that model's coverage area highlighted on the map — drag to rotate, scroll to zoom, and use the navigation control to reset the view. Models defined on a projected (non-lat/lon) grid show their extent as reported in the source metadata, which may not align with real-world geography as precisely as a native lat/lon model. Use the checkboxes above the globe to overlay tectonic plate boundaries (PB2002), GEM active faults, and a 30° lat/lon graticule for geological and geographic context.
