The Earth models listed here have been contributed to the EarthScope Earth Model Collaboration (EMC) by researchers from t
he broader geoscience community. Early EMC models were primarily provided in the NetCDF-3 Classic formata>. For consistency, long-term maintainability, and improved storage efficiency,
all models have now been standardized to the NetCDF-4 Classic format with compression enabled.
Use the filter controls below to narrow models by region and type, then select models for your desired action.
Visit the EMC product page or use the "Show more" link below for additional information. You can also browse and filter
these models by inferred coverage area on the EMC Model Catalog page. Visit the

The netCDF-4 Classic model format preserves the data model of netCDF-3 Classic while
leveraging the HDF5-based storage features of netCDF-4. This means that netCDF-4 Classic files maintain
compatibility with software expecting the netCDF-3 data model, while also enabling features such as
compression, chunking, and larger file sizes. Although the internal format differs (it uses HDF5), the
external interface and data structure remain consistent with netCDF-3, making it an ideal choice for users
who want improved performance and smaller files without breaking compatibility.

Note: Choosing a preset replaces any drawn box. The box works with Min
% model
overlap.
Min model overlap (%)
Requires at least this % of a model’s area to fall inside the blue box.
Raise it (e.g., 40–70%) to favor models mostly within your area; lower it (e.g., 10–30%) to include
partial
overlaps.
For small study areas, try 80–90%.
Note: With the Global preset, truly global models bypass this
threshold.
Filters
Narrow results by depth, year, grid, and variables.
Variables: prefix match only — names must start with your term;
differently
named equivalents may be missed.
Select files (mini map or ✓)
Click a row’s mini map or ✓ checkbox to toggle that file. Selected files draw an orange outline on the
main map
and enable the Actions menu.
Use Select All / Deselect All to toggle the current page.
Sort
Toggles between alphabetical order (Name) and
Added, which sorts models by the date they were added
to the EMC repository (newest first).
Use Added to quickly find recently incorporated models.
Note: This sort is based on repository add date, not publication year.
Jump to model
Use the Jump to model dropdown to scroll to a model, highlight all its files, and
keep
them
grouped.
Long names are shortened (hover to see full).
